Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos
|
|
This weekend, February 27th and 28th we will have a special announcement from St. Thomas Aquinas parishioner a Sarah Weiner about the time she spent volunteering for a Catholic sponsored
program for orphaned children. Please pray for, and donate as you are led to help these children. A special table with information will be in the church narthex with volunteers passing out information and collecting donations.
In Mexico in 1954 a compassionate priest opened his heart and his home to a homeless orphan. In a year, there were 32 such boys under
Father Wasson's care. Now these orphanages exist in nine Latin American countries and have cared for over 16,000 children.
He called them "Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos" - "Our Little Brothers and Sisters."
The organization (NPH) provides the children with basic needs, plus spiritual guidance and education through university. Those wishing to help
break the cycle of poverty for these children are invited to sponsor a child or make a more general donation. Godparents(sponsors) are invited to
write to and visit their children and see the good work they are making possible.
More can be learned at the website: www.NPH.org or

Relief Efforts for Haiti
|
|
The Diocese of Charlotte is responding to the recent 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti by
collecting funds on behalf of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to be used for short-term and long-term
recovery efforts.
This disaster has created a situation of human suffering that the victims cannot alleviate without
assistance. Initial reports state that the capital city of Port-au-Prince is devastated.
Parishioners in the diocese of Charlotte can respond to parish initiatives by remitting a contribution
directly to a parish. Make checks payable to the parish, marked clearly for the Haiti Disaster Relief.
Donations to assist CRS in short-term and long-term relief and recovery efforts can also be made
payable to the Diocese of Charlotte - Haiti Disaster Relief, and mailed to:
Haiti Disaster Relief
Catholic Diocese of Charlotte
1123 South Church Street
Charlotte, NC 28203-4003
CRS was founded in 1943 by the bishops of the United States to provide humanitarian aid to
people in need all over the world. Currently it provides assistance to more than 80 million people in 100
countries and territories.
Catholic Relief Services has been named a top-rated charity by the American Institute of
Philanthropy and given the rating of “A” by AIP for efficiently using the majority of its funds toward
programming versus fundraising.
To learn more about CRS visit the website www.CRS.org.
The Diocese of Charlotte serves the spiritual needs of 400,000 Roman Catholics in the 46 counties
of Western North Carolina. The diocesan website is www.CharlotteDiocese.org.

Real Faith Stories
|
It was 1947. Benny was in the Polish cavalry on the day Hitler’s Germany invaded Poland and was captured; spending the rest of the war in a German prison camp. Everywhere there was starvation, brutality, suffering and death; many of Benny's friends died terrible deaths, a living hell on Earth. For five years and seven months he endured, but lost his faith in God after witnessing the horrors of war. Once an altar boy and faithful Catholic, Benny turned away from God. After the Americans liberated the camp on Easter Sunday 1945, the remnants of the Polish Army regrouped in Italy until the end of the war. At that time Benny’s unit went to England, rather than return to Poland to face the Russian occupation.

The Pro Life Fight Continues
|
We have an essential responsibility as Catholics to defend human
life and it’s sanctity on every level. Inutero children are
helpless to help themselves or offer an argument that defends their rights to life. As faithful and concerned Catholics are the voices
for the unborn. What better way to express our solidarity and unity in our beliefs than praying the Rosary and seeking Mary’s maternal
protection and intervention with Jesus to eliminate abortion.
As Catholics we need to utilize all of the resources at our disposal, natural, and spiritual
to bring about reconciliation and healing of this global injustice against the dignity of all human life.
